Enid built Oklahoma’s first municipal airport in 1928, four miles southeast of town. The Playboys Rod and Custom Association held its first race there on April 20, 1958. In Drag News that April, Don Elliott called the Playboys a hard-working group that had long deserved the support it was finally getting from city officials and businessmen. Races were AHRA sanctioned in 1958. Another race ran on the runway on August 28, 1960, and one more on Sunday, March 26, 1961, when Jack Thrasher of Arkansas City won top eliminator in his D dragster.

Background

Woodring is Enid's city-owned general aviation airport, about five miles southeast of downtown. Central Airlines flew out of it from the early 1950s into the 1960s, so the Playboys were sharing the field with airline traffic. Today most of its flying is military training from nearby Vance Air Force Base.
