Racing ran on a runway at Woodbine Municipal Airport, a mile southeast of town. Some sources say it began in 1951, but records are scarce, and the earliest newspaper mention found is from 1956. The New Jersey Timing Association held NHRA regional races there on June 16-17, 1956, and ads called it the first such event, which argues against the earlier start. Five thousand people watched the rain-shortened final day, with 130 racers entered. Mike Gurtizen set an East Coast speed record of 116.73 MPH in the rear-engine dragster of York, Pennsylvania’s Gent’s Roadster club. The Tri-State Drags, with racers from Long Island, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, were planned for June 23-24 in 26 classes, with North Plainfield’s Motor Mounts Hot Rod Club running a timer it had built. Other races were held on September 16, September 30 and October 14. Little else is known.
