History

This strip opened in 1967 as a quarter mile, though the online source for that year cites no documentation. A racer who ran there in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s came back for the August nostalgia event years later and said that standing on his trailer and looking around, it felt like 1967 all over again. He called it an out-of-the-way place time never caught up with. The earliest newspaper mention found is from 1972, about a young man who won a trophy in F/SA with his ‘67 Cougar. For several years it ran as an unsanctioned, outlaw, nonprofit eighth-mile track owned by eleven racers, and by the mid-1990s it had IHRA sanction. Lease problems came up in 2025, and longtime racer Crystal Lancaster leased the track to keep it going as Fernald Field Dragway.
