History

This track was open by 1972. Verlie Barton built it in the 1970s on family land near his Verlie Barton Lake, on Alabama Highway 5 in Lynn. He later sold it to his daughter, Lid Barton Hicks, who kept it going as a “Southern Outlaw/Wildcat” strip with many Outlaw Pro Stock and Outlaw Pro Mod events. The family raced competitive Outlaw Pro Stock cars: Verlie’s son Wallace Barton ran a Pro Stock Vega, and Lid’s son Cooney Hicks took his “Mopar Kid” Pro Stock Hemi Colt up against stars like Grumpy Jenkins and Roy Hill. Newspapers reported the track had closed for the summer in early June 1977, and the 1978 season ended on Saturday, August 26. It apparently still runs as an eighth-mile asphalt track.
