Drag racing at this strip goes back to at least May 1956. It was about two miles southeast of Winnsboro, a mile off the Perryville road (Highway 852) on what’s known as the Old Tram Road, and raced every Sunday. When it reopened on April 7, 1957, ads called it the East Texas Speedway. An ad for the October 11, 1959, race promised a Chrysler-powered altered coupe that had been clocked at 143 MPH. A gap in the record makes it hard to say whether it ran from 1960 to 1963, but a September 1963 ad said the strip had been rebuilt and would race every Sunday, with trophies for class winners and cash for top eliminator. Ads in 1965-66 told men not to stay home fussing with their wives and to bring them out to the strip instead.
