A drag race on June 8, 1958 used the old east-west concrete runway at the south end of the base, with sixteen class trophies. The Sedalia police department supplied radar to clock speeds, and Carl Deifendorfer was fastest at 99 mph in his 1958 Corvette. Drag racing came back to Whiteman almost twenty years later as Knob Noster Raceway.
