The Wendover Times newspaper was sponsoring drag races at the airport by 1997, including a race on Sunday, October 19 that year. Racing had stopped by 2011.
Background
During World War II the base trained crews for B-17 and B-24 bombers, and the 509th Composite Group prepared there for the atomic missions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Air Force closed it in 1969, Wendover City took it over in 1977, and Tooele County has run it as a public airport since 1998.
