This strip sits southeast of San Angelo on an old airfield south of Wall, once Vancourt Army Airfield Auxiliary #6. Racing used the northeast-southwest runway, with the western north-south runway for parking and pits. A 1954 issue of Hot Rod said the West Texas Timing Association planned an NHRA regional championship there on June 19-20, 1954, and longtime racer Wyatt Hopson said the strip had been running since 1954. Class winners got trophies on Sunday, May 13, 1962. In 1963 the strip was AHRA sanctioned and held a two-day Southwest Regional and Lone Star State Championship on July 20-21. It was San Angelo Dragway by 1965, may also have been called Double A Raceway at some point, and went by Sportsman’s Park Raceway or Dragway around 1970-72. Before the 2011 season, landowner Bobby Eggemeyer told track owner Carol Pierce he would not renew her contract or deal with any other buyer.
