The Kansas state championship drag races ran on a runway at Walker Air Force Base near Victoria on October 16, 1955. NHRA sanctioned the quarter-mile event, and admission was fifty cents. In 1963 the Walker Timing Association prepared a runway at the old base for its first race on May 5, run under AHRA rules on a strip 8,000 feet long and 144 feet wide. Ads that year called it the Walker Timing Association Drag Strip. Walt Arfons made three exhibition runs in his “Green Monster” jet dragster on August 4, 1963. Races ran on the first Sunday of each month. Twelve races were held in 1964, when the strip switched from AHRA to NHRA sanction.
