Larry Sams remembers racing at the Vidalia Airport strip as early as 1964. Harvey Fountain ran the strip and filed incorporation papers for it on August 27, 1969. Races ran on a runway of what is still the active Vidalia Municipal Airport, once a World War II auxiliary field. In 1969 Governor Lester Maddox made money available to refurbish the runways, which improved the racing surface. According to one researcher, it was advertised as an eighth-mile strip and held a lot of pro stock match races in its early days. Nobody knows why it closed in the mid-1980s.
