Victory Field opened in 1941 as a World War II flight school for the Army Air Force and became a civilian airport with a 2,700-foot runway after the war. In 1950 the state took over the buildings north of the runway for a mental hospital. Drag racing on the old runway may have started as early as 1957, but the first record found is a race on June 15, 1958, sponsored by Leon Taylor of Quanah. In 1958 races ran on the first and third Sundays of each month, with trophies for every class winner, and the concrete strip was being reconditioned.
