Three Del Rio car clubs, the Runners, Road Angels and Thunderbirds, teamed up to run drag races at the airport. They held a Labor Day race on September 3, 1956, charging racers $1 and spectators 50 cents, and another on November 11, 1956. In 1958 races ran every other Sunday. On April 27, 1958, C. F. Carter took fastest time and top eliminator on his 1957 Harley with 15.50 seconds. The airport was built in 1942 with three paved runways in a triangle and served during the war as an auxiliary to Laughlin Field, 1.5 miles southeast. The county got it back after the war, and it stopped being used as an airfield in 1959. It sat northeast of U.S. 90 and Route 2523, and housing developments cover most of the site today.
