In summer 1952 the Topeka Drag-Ons car club began holding drag races on a 9/10-mile stretch of abandoned highway, with clubs from Kansas City and Leavenworth taking part. Each entry paid $1, and at one meet $64 left over after expenses went to the national polio foundation. Hot Rod ran early photos in February 1953 (pp. 42-45, 49).
