The Top O’ Texas Car Association sponsored races at a brand new strip four miles south of Pampa on Highway 70, on the same site used for drag racing in the 1950s. The first race, NHRA sanctioned, was on July 14, 1963, with trophies for 34 class and eliminator winners, $1 admission and a $2.50 entry fee. David Potter won top eliminator on May 17, 1964, and another race followed June 7. On September 13, 1964, more than 1,000 spectators watched 120 racers. Bill Parker set the SS/A strip record of 11 seconds flat in his 1964 Ford Fairlane, and R. D. Thomas set the B/G record of 12.6 seconds in his 1941 Studebaker. Races seem to have been monthly, with the next one set for October 18.
