The Thomasville Dragmasters Association ran NASCAR-sanctioned drag races at an old Army airport on Pavo Road, seven miles northeast of town. The city built the airport in 1941 and leased it to the Army Air Force for training during World War II. One of the first races, maybe the very first, was on July 14, 1957, and Orman Crabb won top eliminator on July 21 at 93.59 mph. Racing didn’t last, as city commissioners stopped it on August 18, 1957. Still, races are documented in Thomasville in 1960 and 1968, and the Swedish magazine Start & Strip included it in a 1968 list of 325 U.S. drag strips.
