The Mid-Columbia Timing Association held drag races at The Dalles airport. On June 28, 1959, Albert Young had the best time, 16.40 at 88.55 mph, in his DeSoto-engined ‘34 Ford C/A. In 1960 races ran on the third Sunday, starting May 22. When racing came back in the early 1970s there were no concrete barriers to protect spectators, but they were added later.
