The speedway held an NHRA-sanctioned eighth-mile race on July 29, 1973, with a $2,000 purse and classes for modified production, super stock and ET brackets. Eddie Conrad won modified production in his ‘67 Chevelle and Mike Brumbelow won super stock. A crowd of 5,000 was enough to justify a second race on August 26. In a match race between two fuel dragsters, the Watson Brothers and Love Chrysler beat the Potts and Petty Chevrolet. At the August 26 race Lee Shepherd beat Chris Lawrence, and both set national records in their classes. General manager Bill Marvel then leased the speedway to John Adam and Edward Blackmon to promote a September 16 race. It drew only sixty cars and 600 fans. Conrad won modified eliminator, but the poor turnout ended drag racing at the speedway for 1973 and for years after. Local drag racing started there again in 2015.

Background

Texas World Speedway opened in 1969 with a 2-mile oval and several road course layouts, and it hosted NASCAR, IMSA and USAC events over the years. Lawrence LoPatin's American Raceways, Inc. built it, then sold it to Daniel W. Holloway in 1971 after running into money trouble. The track closed in 2017 and was torn down, and most of the land is now the Southern Pointe housing development.
