The Strip Stormers of Aurora car club formed in late 1952 or January 1953 and held its first drag race on February 8, 1953, near the Denver Country Club at First Avenue and University Boulevard in Denver. Watching was free and entries cost 50 cents. City officials approved racing there for one month, and club president Eldred Westback hoped to find a more permanent spot before March. They found one three-quarters of a mile east and ten miles south of Bennett, probably a graded dirt strip, though newspapers didn’t say. The landowner agreed to keep the quarter-mile strip in racing shape. The first race there was set for March 8, 1953, with 50-cent admission and several top cars from western Nebraska expected. The club planned to race every Sunday and hoped to build a concession stand.
