This strip was four miles north of Gilmer on the west side of Highway 271, at a wide spot in the road called Bettie. It was mostly a place for local sportsman racers to have fun on Friday nights. On April 13, 1962, for example, 39 cars raced for 14 trophies, and on July 4, 1965, $75 in prize money was offered in just two classes. In the late 1960s, after racing ended, it was called Stracener’s Airport and also hosted swap meets.
