The Slow Pokes, a car club formed by Oklahoma A&M students in December 1954, held drag races on the Stillwater airport runway. Their first race, on January 30, 1955, drew over 2,000 spectators, with trophies in fourteen classes. Buddy Jackson of Oklahoma City was fastest overall at 112.26 mph on his motorcycle, and Ted Oney of Oklahoma City was fastest on four wheels at 111.23 mph in his rail job. It may have been the only race held there.
