In August 1952 St. Lucie County commissioners allowed single-car timed drag runs on the taxi strip at the edge of St. Lucie airport. The first race, on September 28, 1952, had 24 entries. Car clubs from Fort Pierce, Vero Beach and Melbourne, together called the Tri-County Timing Association, ran and sanctioned the events. Cars could take a flying or standing start on the measured quarter mile. In 1954 the association renamed itself the Junior Safety Council. In 1956 the Florida Suncoast Timing Association had to cancel a race set for October 28 because no judge had signed the charter it needed to run as a sanctioned NHRA track.
