Johnny Stansell proposed the races to the Springdale city council on January 28, 1975, and the council approved. The Northwest Arkansas Auto Association held its first drag race on Sunday, May 18, 1975, on the closed-off east end of Ford Avenue, and Chuck Mayes of Fayetteville was the overall winner. Races ran about once a month that year. On June 29, 65 entries raced and Jerry Pratt won stock option in his 1955 Chevy. At the July 13 race, a $150 purse was split among winners and runners-up in the showroom stock and stock option classes. Racers paid $5 to enter and spectators got in free. The season ended with races on August 17 and August 31, the last with a $400 total purse and more than 1,100 people watching. According to the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History, Ford Avenue was then a dead-end street, blocked off for racing, with no bleachers or facilities. An Arkansas State Police Troop L building stood near the east end, and some think the troopers allowed the legal racing to curb the illegal racing already going on there and around Springdale, which would have needed the Springdale police involved too. Racing happened only in 1975.
