The Nevada Timing Association left the Douglas-Tahoe Airport for a new strip at Silver Springs, where the Fernley-Yerington highway crosses U.S. 50 between Carson City and Fallon, near Lahontan Lake. The site was a former military auxiliary field called Churchill Flight Strip, 7,500 feet long and 150 feet wide. Bill Friedman of Roseville, California, won the first race on June 1, 1958 at 126.72 MPH in his dragster. On July 30-31, 1960, the Cal-Neva Timing Association of Vacaville, the Southern Oregon Timing Association and the Nevada Timing Association co-sponsored the Great Western Invitational, with sixty classes over the quarter and half mile. Jimmy Fox of Pomona had top half-mile speed at 184.04 MPH in the Fox-McComb A/MR. In 1961 races ran the last Sunday of each month under NHRA sanction, and on April 30 Warren Welsh set the quarter-mile track records at 9.759 and 152.28 MPH in Reno’s Custom Auto Glass Special. In 1962 the association dropped Silver Springs to focus on getting the Lemmon Valley strip running.
