Little has been found about this strip beyond the fact that it was a working eighth-mile with a concrete starting pad. It belonged to Shangri-La Speedway, an old paved half-mile track on Route 17 west of Owego. NASCAR-sanctioned drag racing started in 1959 and ended a few years later. Twenty-five years after that, drag races came back to the same spot as Tioga Motorsports Park.

Background
Besides the half-mile oval and the eighth-mile drag strip, Shangri-La had a tenth-mile oval for microds, the wooden-bodied go-karts popular in upstate New York clubs. The track later ran as Shangri-La Motor Speedway from 1979 to 1991 and Tioga Motorsports Park from 1992 to 2005, though fans kept calling it Shangri-La.
