Scappoose, near Portland, held drag races at its airport as early as 1952, and an NHRA regional championship there in 1955. On May 27, 1956, at a Columbia Timing Association race, police tried to arrest fifteen minors for drinking beer, and 500 spectators surrounded the officers in protest, nearly causing a riot. The drivers were reportedly cooperative. In early June 1956 the county court banned drag racing at the airport. On July 13, 1958, Bud Haines set a world speed record for fuel dragsters under 300 cubic inches at 156.65 mph. In 1959 the county court stopped the races after a near riot over minors arrested for drinking. The airport is now Scappoose Industrial Airpark.
