This strip on Highway 17 southwest of Garden City opened as a quarter mile in 1968. It was built beside the Savannah Speedway oval on the footprint of the old Scott Airfield. Rising insurance costs and safety concerns cut it to an eighth mile in the mid-1980s. Jeff Harris ran it from 1999 until it closed for good after the 2005 season, when the lease ran out and a neighbor had filed noise complaints.

Background

Noise complaints from a neighbor and an expiring lease nearly shut the track at the end of 2005, until a last-minute extension carried it into 2006. In 2004 lightning struck six people at the dragway. A new eighth-mile, Savannah River Dragway, opened in Screven County in 2006, about 50 miles northwest of the old site.
