In spring 1978 local drag racers formed the Capitol City Street Rods club to cut down on street racing, especially on Cerrillos Road. They asked permission to run a temporary strip that summer where St. Francis Drive dead-ends at its south end, and they were scouting sites for a permanent one. Whether they got permission that summer isn’t known, but they did race in 1979. One of the first races that year was on Sunday, July 22, three miles south of Santa Fe off State Highway 14, with trophies in two brackets. Racers paid $2 and spectators $1. Another race followed on August 26, when Clayton Smith made exhibition runs in his econo dragster. Those two may have been the club’s only races.
