Texas Raceway’s website says the track opened in 1961, but that hasn’t been confirmed, and a 1963 aerial photo shows no strip there in 1961-63. Aerial views show it by 1968 at the latest. The April 1969 issue of Hot Rod listed it as an NHRA-sanctioned track, racing Friday and Saturday nights through November. On April 5, 1969, Jim Crandall, 25, of Irving, was killed racing on the eighth-mile strip. Les Nelson managed it around 1969-70. By 1976 it was called Texas Raceway, still NHRA sanctioned and racing Friday and Saturday nights. It later ran without any sanctioning body. The city ruled against its continued operation, and it closed in the fall of 2016.
