On August 19, 1962, this air base seventeen miles south of Kansas City hosted an AHRA-sanctioned drag race on its east-west runway, run by the Kansas City Timing Association. Two hundred racers ran in front of 7,500 people. Rod Stuckey won top eliminator and $500 with an 8.80 at 182.03 mph in his A/FD, and Art Arfons had a best of 214.28 mph in his ‘Green Monster’ jet dragster. Proceeds went to the Air Force Aid Society. The east-west runway is gone now.
