NHRA-sanctioned eighth-mile racing ran on a runway at what was still an active airport. At first only junior dragsters raced, and later bracket cars were allowed too. The airport closed in 2014 for redevelopment. Denny Shorett, who drove a customized stock ‘55 Olds, told the San Bernardino County Sun in 1986 that he raced about four times at Miro Airport, now Rialto Airport, in the late 1950s or early 1960s. He said the airport shut down on Saturday nights for quarter-mile drags, and every so often they’d stop racing and turn on the landing lights to let a plane land, which the crowd always booed. No other evidence of those races has been found.
