The first drag race on South Riverside Avenue in Bloomington was held the night of June 6, 1956. Bob Armstrong’s dragster was quickest at 10.51 and 130 mph, but John Bradley won top eliminator when Armstrong’s car broke its transmission. The only newspaper report, in the Bloomington News of June 6, 1956, called it the Rialto Drag Strip and claimed a record number of entries, which any number would have been on opening day. It said races would run every Saturday, opening at 4:30 PM with eliminations at 8 PM.
