Drag races were running in Raton by 1962, maybe earlier. On September 16, 1962, Tony Blea of Santa Fe beat five other Super Stock entries with a 14.9 in the quarter mile. Hot Rod’s 1963 lists of NHRA-sanctioned tracks called it the Jaycee Dragstrip. More than 200 entries were expected for a tri-state regional championship in mid-April 1963, and there was another race on September 15 that year. Rick Milinazzo said the races were held at the municipal airport, twelve miles southwest of town.
