This track opened as a quarter-mile in 1977. An ad for a big race on Sunday, September 11, 1977, called it the “newest and finest racing facility in the Southwest.” Adger Smith, who built it with a partner, said construction started in 1976, lights and equipment came over from Whitehouse in late 1976 and early 1977, a few warm-up races ran very late in 1977, and 1978 was the first full season. Smith sold out to his partner after 1978. The track was NHRA-sanctioned from the start but later ran as an eighth-mile outlaw track, then under IHRA, and rejoined NHRA in November 2024, and for one period it timed races over 1,000 feet. At that September 11, 1977 race, Ray Motes won three straight runs in his Kansas-based top fuel dragster against Fred Snavely’s Vega funny car.
