On September 26, 1971, Edith Rehyer of Friona, Texas, won the $48 first-place jackpot, the first time a girl had won it. Bill Bradshaw, who raced there in the 1970s, remembered an eighth-mile strip on West Cherry Street and has written about racing there. The races were more likely held at Portales Municipal Airport, just west of West Cherry Street, which the city kept up until about 1987.
