A drag race ran on the base’s 11,000-foot main runway on August 17, 1958. NHRA supervised the event, which was open to Air Force drivers and racers from Canada, New England and New York. Spectators got in free and racers paid $2. The base had its own auto club, the Dimmers, and thirty trophies were handed out.

Background
The Air Force left Plattsburgh in 1995, and a redevelopment corporation has been reworking the old base ever since. Clinton County has owned the airfield since 2002 and moved its passenger service there in 2007, and most of Plattsburgh International's travelers are Canadians from the Montreal area.
