In March 1958 the Throttle Kings hot rod club, with help from the Piedmont Jaycees, started building a drag strip two miles north of Piedmont just off the Centre Highway. Plans called for a strip forty feet wide and half a mile long, room for quarter-mile racing. The National Guard’s 145th Engineer Company did the grading and built concession stands. Work was still going in July 1958, when the club held a car wash to help pay for the strip and made $37.50 washing 75 cars. Whether the strip was ever finished isn’t known. A 1965 aerial photo suggests it was probably dirt, and 2015 aerial photos show no trace of it.
