The Pennellville strip was a quarter mile of scraped clay, half a mile southwest of the center of town. On August 1, 1954, it hosted the NHRA-sanctioned Tri-State Regional Championship, with 175 entries from five states and Canada and five NHRA officials helping with inspection and classing. The Valley Drivers Association and the Empire State Timing Association sponsored it. Every class winner got a trophy, and the winning car’s mechanic got a plaque. Tom Haelen of Rochester beat twenty cars to win the modified coupe class and the Piston Pusher’s trophy. Races followed on September 12 and on October 24, the season finale, where Nate Hughes of Corning had top speed at 98.18 MPH in his Ardun conversion. In 1958 the strip opened in late July and raced every Sunday.
