The Texans Hot Rod Club of Pampa held a six-state drag championship on May 20, 1956, at an old auxiliary airport four miles south of Pampa on Highway 70. Earlier drag races had been held at the old Pampa Air Field, twelve miles east of town, on the Wheeler Highway. On July 21, 1957, the NHRA-sanctioned 3rd annual Southwester regional championship was rained out before it finished, but not before Lee Christian ran 128 MPH in his Olds-powered dragster. On October 26, 1958, the TPTA sponsored another NHRA-sanctioned meet, with a crew from Roswell, New Mexico, handling the timing. In 1961 the Sidewinders car club raced there on the first and third Sundays, so it was sometimes called Sidewinder Dragway that year. In 1963 the site became Top O’ Texas Dragway.
