Races were held at the municipal airport northwest of town, sponsored by the Palacios Jaycees. A drag race is said to have been held there on November 22, 1959. On May 8, 1960, at one of the first races on the airport strip, 1,500 spectators watched more than 170 racers. Linn Huitt won a $100 bond with his fuel-burning Chrysler dragster, running 177 MPH in 9.16 seconds. Class winners got trophies at a race on Sunday, June 12, 1960.
