For at least one season, races ran on the runway of Dickinson Municipal Airport, five miles south of town. The Pacers Auto Club of Dickinson sponsored and ran them, which gave the strip its name. The first NHRA-sanctioned race was on July 4, 1971, featuring a funny car match race. The season’s last race, on Sunday, September 26, 1971, offered over $3,000 in prizes. Races were also scheduled for July 2, 1972, during Dickinson’s second annual Roughrider Festival.
