The Salt Kings Rod & Custom Club got approval to hold a drag race on Wall Avenue in Ogden on May 1, 1955, with the road blocked off between 33rd Street and Riverdale Road beside Affleck Park. The Ogden Recreation Department, Ogden police and the Weber County Sheriff’s Office backed the one-day event, and NHRA sanctioned it. Proceeds paid to move a surplus Army building to Ogden Municipal Airport as a club house. Cars used rolling starts and raced side by side, and were expected to hit up to 90 MPH through the measured distance.
