Drag races were held in 1956 on the oval inside St. Louis University’s football stadium, just west of St. Louis University High School. The 19,000-seat Edward J. Walsh Memorial Stadium was built in 1930, and a fifth-mile dirt oval went in just outside the football field in 1935. It started with midget racing, went dark during the war, and added stock cars in the early 1950s. It was renamed Oakland Stadium in 1952. The 1956 season was its last, and the oval was torn down in April 1957.
