After months of court battles, Milt Morris and Jim Blair won permission to hold drag races on their new quarter-mile concrete and asphalt track, fourteen miles north of Pierre near the east shore of Lake Oahe. They took the Oahe Speedway name from an old 3/8-mile dirt oval that ran northeast of Pierre until the mid-1970s. Rain cancelled the scheduled opener, so the first running was a test-and-tune on July 2, 2005, followed by a two-day grand opening on July 3-4. Nancy Morris and Vince Elsinger ran the NHRA-sanctioned track at first. Its spot near the Lake Oahe dam earned it the nickname the Dam Fast Track. Ten NHRA national records were set there on September 20, 2008, and through 2015 records fell often at NHRA Division 5 races there. In 2017 the newly formed Oahe Racers Association took over the races on a limited schedule. The land was sold, and racing ended after the 2021 season.
