This eighth-mile strip ran under NHRA sanction on a runway at the former Norton Air Force Base, which was deactivated and renamed San Bernardino International Airport around 1993-94. Drag races were held there on September 10 and September 17, 1994, as part of San Bernardino’s Route 66 Rendezvous. Top fuel and alcohol cars weren’t allowed. Racers paid $15 to enter and spectators $5.

Norton Drags

Background

Norton Air Force Base sat two miles east of downtown San Bernardino and was an active Air Force facility from 1942 to 1994, so the drag races ran right as the base was closing.
