Saturday night drag races began on this half-mile clay oval on August 8, 1959, timed over an eighth-mile on the straight from turn 4 to turn 1. Lewis Maw was the promoter. William Bedenbaugh won top eliminator and $65 at the opener in his ‘55 Chevy. Clyde Summer of Aiken won on August 15 in his 1957 Ford. Jimmy Claxton won on September 19, earning the right to represent Newberry at the National Meet of Champions in Crown Point, Indiana. Research found drag racing there only in 1959 and early 1960. The oval opened in 1952 and stopped running around 1979. It stood just northwest of the intersection of Dixie Road and Adelaide Street.
