The city of New Castle leased land in Cunningham Park to the Kust-Ods car club for a drag strip at $1 a year. The club had formed in 1953. When the lease began in August, the strip was already laid out but needed more grading before the club could blacktop it. It was half a mile long and 25 feet wide. To get there, drivers went through Deshon Village or took Cascade Boulevard from Hamilton Street.
