As an experiment to curb illegal street racing and vandalism and improve relations between teenagers and police, Naples police closed Westview Drive in an industrial area for a supervised drag race on Sunday, April 11, 1976. Ten local businessmen backed the event, which drew almost 300 racers. Encouraged, officer Bill Beattie led an effort to get nearby Immokalee Airport for regular supervised races. After a year of work, racing was allowed at the airport in mid-1977.
