Mustang Field, now El Reno Municipal Air Park, is five miles southwest of El Reno. The Reno Road Ramblers car club, led by president Mac Oyler, got permission to drag race on one of the old army airfield’s runways. The first race, on May 20, 1956, made the club $90, with spectators paying 25 cents. With no timing equipment, cars simply raced each other. A second race set for June 3, 1956, was canceled because the runway surface was too thin to stand up to the racing. The club looked for a farmer who’d let them race on his land but didn’t find one.
