History
One drag racing database wrongly gives 1959 as the opening year. Hot Rod’s August 1960 issue and the Muncie Evening Press both gave the opening date as July 3, 1960, which is correct. The track is on Highway 67 six miles northeast of Muncie. Larry Miller held the strip record at 164 mph before June 1961. On October 8, 1961, Mickey Thompson and Chris Karamesines were among the featured racers, and match racers were booked regularly through the 1960s to bring in crowds. In summer 1963 it raced every Saturday night. NHRA sanctioned it in the 1960s, and it moved to IHRA in the early 1970s, when it was called Muncie Mid-America Dragway. It hosted the IHRA World Record Championship Drag Races, with a $20,000 purse, on July 21-22, 1973. In late 1979 Jerry Runyon sold the track to Dr. Ross Egger and Norman Day, who renamed it Muncie International Raceway, stayed with IHRA and made a number of improvements, including a big concrete starting pad. It joined NHRA again in 2007 and returned to IHRA in 2017, which it runs under today as an eighth-mile track.
