The Axle Twisters Hot Rod Club held drag races every two weeks on a stretch of old U.S. 81 southeast of Moundridge. The March 18, 1956, race drew 65 entries and a big crowd. The next race was set for April 1, but McPherson County commissioners shut the races down. The Kansas Highway Patrol worried that drivers on the new highway, which ran alongside the old one just a few feet away, would be distracted. Left without a place to race, the club looked for a new site and asked the commissioners for help. It later planned the Axle Twisters Drag Strip at Canton.
